Customer Data Rights
Customers have the right to choose not to receive communications for the marketing of additional energy-related products and services through your CCA Program. All eligible customers who have opted out of the CCA Program will automatically be removed from the CCA Participant list and will not receive marketing about additional energy-related products and services.
To remove your Customer Contact Information from the CCA Participant list please complete the following form:
What data could be shared?
Customer Contact Information for customers currently receiving electricity supply through a CCA Program could be shared. If you have opted out of the CCA Program your Customer Contact Information will not be shared.
“Customer Contact Information” means any information that can be used to identify, locate, or contact a customer including, without limitation: (i.) first and last name (or business name); (ii.) home or other physical address; (iii.) mailing address; (iv.) telephone number; (v.) email address.
Why does Joule have your Customer Contact Information?
The City/Town/Village where you reside or operate a business has executed an electricity supply agreement that automatically enrolls all eligible residents and small businesses who do not opt out. To facilitate the mailing of opt out notifications to all eligible customers your electric utility provides Joule (i.) first and last name (or business name); (ii.) home or other physical address; and (iii.) mailing address.
In addition to the information provided by your utility, Joule may have obtained your telephone number or email address through customer-initiated contact with Joule. If you called or emailed Joule to ask a question or to change your supply offering (opt up or down) or signed up to our newsletter we may have this information. If you called or emailed Joule to opt out we will not share your phone number, email or any other Customer Contact Information.
When can Joule share your Customer Contact Information?
Joule can only share your Customer Contact Information if you are an active participant in a CCA Program. If you have opted out of the CCA electricity supply, if you have moved, or if the CCA Program has ended Joule can no longer share your Customer Contact Information. The length of your contract can be found on the rates page of your CCA Program website.
Why would Joule share your Customer Contact Information?
Your City/Town/Village is supporting renewable electricity goals by participating in a CCA. CCA is a very powerful tool as it uses an opt out framework – all eligible customers are participating unless they choose not to – to maximize participation. This model takes advantage of the benefits of bulk purchasing and has a much larger impact on emission reductions than individual action. Currently, the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) has only authorized this opt out framework for the purchase of electricity and natural gas supply, however there are many energy-related products and services that support energy conservation, electrification and the development of new renewable electricity generation.
Joule may work with other companies and use your Customer Contact Information to market you additional energy-related products and services that if you proactively sign up for (opt in to) will assist the State in meeting its clean energy goals.
Joule will not sell your Customer Contact Information.
Who will Joule share my Customer Contact Information with?
Currently Joule does not use your Customer Contact Information to market any additional energy-related products and services, and your information will not be shared. In the future, Joule may collaborate with your City/Town/Village to offer additional energy-related products and services that your City/Town/Village believe to be beneficial. If decisions are made to use your Customer Contact Information for marketing Joule will update this information.
Is my Customer Contact Information safe with Joule?
Joule takes data security and privacy very seriously. Prior to serving as a CCA Administrator the state required Joule to develop an Information Security Policy and Incident Response Procedure, enable role-based access controls, multi-factor authentication and 24/7 third-party monitoring of networks for anomalous activity, install and keep antivirus software updated, and provide regular security awareness training to employees working with data. In addition, all data must be encrypted in transit.
